Representative Karen Bass (D-Calif.) released the following statement after her vote against the Farm Bill because it cuts $8 billion in food assistance:
“The Farm Bill is possibly the most complex piece of legislation outside of the federal budget, and it was an opportunity for environmental and other progressive causes to work together to make sure that all Americans would have access to healthy food. Unfortunately, the final version divided Americans against themselves. Although there were some components that I supported including increasing funding for conservation efforts to protect open space and help provide clean air and clean water for millions of Americans as well as reforming the international food aid program, the fact that bill set a precedence for cutting food assistance to Americans was simply unacceptable to me.
“I simply cannot support legislation that will cut $8 billion from food assistance for Americans over the next ten years. More than ever, we should be committed as a nation to expanding nutrition assistance and providing families with healthy food and enough to eat. The cuts in this legislation will move us in the wrong direction, and we should not be making it more difficult for families in need to feed themselves.”
