Coalition to make announcement on major funding initiative addressing health disparities through wellness trust in Los Angeles

On Tuesday, December 10, hundreds of policymakers, community leaders, union members, and residents will gather on International Human Rights Day for the 4th Annual Health & Human Rights convening at St. John’s Well Child and Family Center, 808 W. 58th Street to take action on health disparities affecting Los Angeles.

Conference Conveners include St. John’s Well Child and Family Center, SEIU-UHW, Health Access, CHIRLA—Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles, Community Coalition, Brotherhood Crusade, SAJE—Strategic Action for a Just Economy, SCOPE-LA, Esperanza Community Housing, Southside Coalition of Community Health Centers, LA CAN —Los Angeles Community Action Network, Physicians for a National Health Program California, PSR—Physicians for Social Responsibility, Worksite Wellness, LAANE—Los Angeles Alliance for a New Economy, Father Boyle, Homeboy Industries, LAM—Los Angeles Metropolitan Churches

According to the June 2013 "Health Atlas for the City of Los Angeles,” the longest life expectancy in the City is an average of 84 years in Brentwood, but goes down dramatically to an average of 72 years in Watts and South Los Angeles neighborhoods. This discrepancy exposes a health crisis to be addressed at the convening.

While the Affordable Care Act will enable many in these communities to qualify for and afford once unreachable health insurance, many will be left uncovered and continue to suffer from preventable diseases.

“Nationally, the Affordable Care Act is a major step in providing access to health coverage for tens of millions of Americans,” said Jim Mangia, President and CEO of St. John’s Well Child and Family Center. “In Los Angeles, now it’s our turn to develop initiatives and funding to enhance Obamacare and provide prevention and health services to help eliminate health disparities support longer, healthier lives in every community.”

At the convening, a growing city-wide coalition will call on the Los Angeles City Council to establish a health and wellness trust that will bundle the resources of hospitals in the city to provide millions of dollars for preventive services. The goal of such a trust will be to improve health outcomes in our most vulnerable neighborhoods to approach the level of those in our healthiest neighborhoods.
