AltaMed Will Offer Free Health Screenings for Diabetes and Hypertension, and Enrollment Opportunities for Senior Care Services

AltaMed will be participating for the first time in the annual Taste of Soul festival in South L.A. by providing free health screenings for Diabetes and Hypertension at their mobile unit, and sharing information on enrollment for services at their future senior care center at 1776 East Century Boulevard in the Watts community.

On Friday, September 13, AltaMed held a groundbreaking event at the future senior care center in Watts.  They were joined by over 100 individuals for this historic groundbreaking event.  In attendance was Watts Los Angeles City Councilmember Joe Buscaino, Watts Los Angeles County Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas and Watts Congressmember Janice Hahn; as well as, community leaders, faith leaders, residents and AltaMed staff.

"Our community deserves to have its fair share of health care services as any other,” says Pastor Frederick Howard, SouthSide Bethel Baptist Church, and Family of Purpose.  “I believe by having AltaMed in Watts we have the opportunity to begin addressing this issue, as well as that of jobs.  Their presence will help provide job opportunities and much needed economic development."

The site will care for frail, elderly residents age 55 and older who are certified by the State of California to require nursing home care, but will remain in their homes.  The program at this facility will provide the full spectrum of care available through the Medicare and Medi-Cal programs.  A partial list of these services includes primary and specialty medical care, adult day health care, dentistry, laboratory, diagnostic services, meals, physical and occupational therapies and prescription drugs.  Transportation, home care, hospital and nursing home care are coordinated as necessary.

AltaMed is connecting with local leaders to meet members of the community.  "I am very excited about AltaMed coming to Watts,” says Sweet Alice Harris.  “Not only because they will be providing desperately needed health care services for our seniors, but because they kept their word!  Through a great deal of outreach, they have proven to be a good community partner and have honored their commitments."

This service is the first of its kind in the South L.A. community.  Residents interested in learning more about the new site can call AltaMed’s Community Access Point at 1-877-462-2582.  To learn more about AltaMed, please visit www.AltaMed.org.
