 Hattie Jordan

Applause, praise and cake accompanied the 98th birthday celebration for Mrs. Hattie Jordan.

The event was held on July 31 during the Mid-week Worship and Prayer Service at First A.M.E. Church (FAME).  Scores of well-wishers were on hand to salute a woman many called “just a beautiful lady.”

Mrs. Jordan, a member of FAME, relocated to Los Angeles last year after living many years in Washington, DC, said her daughter, Mrs. Laverne Leach.

“My mother was doing well by herself in the home she had been in for 71 years. However, when her health declined, my husband, Robert, just opened up his arms and said there’s no problem about her coming here,” recalled Mrs. Leach.

“It was also his idea to have her birthday party at the church. Robert and his business partner, Sharon Childress, prepare the refreshments for the prayer group and he suggested that it would be great place to have the party,” she said.

By all accounts, Robert was right as people enjoyed the food, fun and fellowship. Also, several attendees shared reflections about Mrs. Jordan’s ‘beautiful personality.’

When asked about the secret to her longevity, Mrs. Jordan replied,  “Just loving the Lord and being a good Christian.”
