Pastor Taurus L. Myhand and the Ward A.M.E. congregation will celebrate their 111th Church Anniversary on Sunday, August 11, at 10 a.m., at 1177 West 25th Street in Los Angeles.

The guest preacher will be the Right Reverend Cornal Garnett Henning, retired bishop in the A.M.E. Church and former pastor of Ward.

“We invite the public to join us and hear the dynamic preached word coming from Bishop Henning.  You will also enjoy music by the 111th Church Anniversary Choir under the direction of Minister of Music Ron Lowe,” said Pastor Myhand.

“To have our former pastor and the 112th Bishop of the A.M.E. Church bring the message is a blessing come true for our historical church,” said Sister Alton Chism-Glaze, Church Anniversary Chair and Trustee.

Following the service, Pastor Myhand will sign copies of his book, ‘Do This in Remembrance of Me.’

Ward A.M.E. was founded in 1902 in the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Pryor in South Los Angeles.  The Rev. Fredrick D. Jordan was appointed in 1950 and moved Ward to its present location in 1951.

Bishop Henning served as pastor from 1972 to 1980. During his tenure, he was twice selected as president of the Los Angeles Housing Commission as well as named executive vice president, president, and chairman of the board of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. Also, he joined with Dr. Henry Mitchell, Bishop Charles Blake, and other ministers to establish the Ecumenical Center for Black Church Studies.

In 1992, Bishop Henning was elected and consecrated the 112th Bishop of the A.M.E. Church and assigned to the 14th Episcopal District in West Africa.  He founded the C. Garnett Henning, Jr., Memorial High School in Cote D’Ivoire that is named in memory of his late son.

From 1996 to 2012, Bishop Henning served in the 19th Episcopal District, the Eighth Episcopal District, and the Third Episcopal District. He retired in 2012.

The 111th Church Anniversary Theme is “Wisdom from the Past, Strength for the Future” which is based on Joshua 4:9.
