Bishop Craig Worsham

A three-day celebration will mark the installation of Bishop Craig A. Worsham as the eighth elected pastor of Peoples Independent Church of Christ.

Several noted ministers will join the historic 98-year-old congregation for worship services held in the edifice at 5856 West Boulevard in Los Angeles.

People’s Independent is well-known for its community outreach ministries as well as the headquarters for the Gospel Music Workshop of America (GMWA) - L.A. Chapter and the Musicians in Action (MIA).

Among its distinguished pastors were the Rev. Clayton D. Russell, Dr. Maurice Dawkins and Bishop William Naylor.  Also, the late Gilbert Lindsey, Los Angeles’ first black councilman, was an active member until his death.

The celebration kicks-off with the Pre-Installation Service featuring Pastor Xavier L. Thompson of Southern Missionary Baptist Church on Friday, June 28, at 7 p.m.  Pastor Thompson is also president of the Baptist Ministers Conference of Los Angeles and Southern California.

The Installation Concert is set for Saturday, June 29, at 4 p.m.  Dr. Rodena Preston and the Gospel Music Workshop of America - Los Angeles Chapter will perform. On Sunday, June 30, at 11: a.m., Pastor Melvin V. Wade, Sr., of Mount Moriah Baptist Church will bring the message.

The official Installation Service takes place Sunday at 4 p.m. The guest preachers are the Rev. Dr. Cecil ‘Chip’ Murray, holder of the John R. Tansey Chair at USC’s Center for Religion and Civic Culture and former pastor of First A.M.E. Church; and Dr. B.T. Newman, pastor emeritus of Citizens of Zion Baptist Church.

Called to the ministry in 1998, Bishop Worsham was licensed and ordained in the A.M.E. Church.  He was youth minister under Pastor Murray and pastor of Mount Olive A.M.E. in St. Louis, MO.

Currently, he serves as the presiding prelate of the 6th Episcopal Diocese of the Greater Church of Deliverance Inc. (GCOD) and as the denomination’s General Secretary. Previously, he was pastor of Trinity Church in North Dallas, TX.

In 2011, he was elected a Bishop by the Dominion Assembly of Churches College of Bishops and consecrated to the episcopacy by Bishop Larry D. Trotter.
