Los Angeles Southwest College

LOS ANGELES, April 18, 2013 – Students in South Los Angeles and the region will have access to summer session closer to home at Los Angeles Southwest College this year. Due to severe statewide budget cuts, students have had limited access to classes to finish their certificates and degree programs. When Southwest’s summer session begins on June 10, students can look forward to additional classes in English, History, Humanities, Math, Nursing, Political Science, Reading, and more.

“We are excited to provide our students with much-needed classes during this summer,” said Dr. Jack E. Daniels, III, president, Los Angeles Southwest College. “The courses we are providing are critical to students’ ability to meet their degree and transfer requirements, which gives us more opportunities to serve our students and support their success.”

“Since I returned to school in fall 2011, I ‘ve always taken 13 or more units. I attend two colleges due to budget cuts because all of the courses are not available at one campus,” said LaMont G. Jackson, a current student at Southwest. “Now that summer school will be at Southwest, I will be taking Anthropology 102, which is one of my general education requirements for transfer credit to UCLA, Cal State Long Beach and Cal State Fullerton.”

Jackson is a returning student who will be graduating from Southwest on June 5 with two certificates from the Chemical Dependency Program in: Recovery Specialist and Chemical Dependency Counselor. He is a Psychology major with an emphasis in Addiction Studies and minoring in sociology. Jackson is pursuing a career as a substance abuse counselor, and will complete his Associate of Science degree in fall 2013.

Summer enrollment is currently underway. For more information about Southwest’s summer classes, visit
