WEST WINS EVENT AT

AVIATION MAINTENANCE COMPETITION

& Takes 4th Overall

The Aviation Mechanics team from West Los Angeles College took first place in the “Turbine Engine Event” at their very first appearance at the Aviation Maintenance Technician (AMT) Society's Maintenance Skills Competition. At the March event held in Las Vegas, the college also took fourth out of 11 teams in the School Category.

The AMT competition drew students and professionals from around the world including Australia, Canada, China and the United States who competed in 5 categories: Commercial Aviation, General Aviation, Schools, Maintenance Repair Overhaul/Original Equipment Manufacturer (MRO/OEM), and Military. The competition had 14 timed events ranging from safety wiring to electrical cannon plug troubleshooting to a written test on Charles Taylor, the mechanic who built the first engine for the Wright Brothers in 1901.

Since its founding, West has trained students for careers in aviation mechanics. West is one of few accredited community colleges in Southern California to offer such a program and is well regarded in the aviation mechanics industry. Certificates and Associate degrees offered include: Aviation Maintenance Technician Associate Degree; Airframe Maintenance Technician Certificate, and Aircraft Power plant Technician Certificate.
