Council President Herb Wesson addresses the Empowerment Congress West Area Neighborhood Council at community Town Hall meeting. - Sentinel File Photo

City Council President Herb Wesson was recently the featured speaker at a Special Stakeholder’s Town Hall Meeting of the Empowerment Congress West Area Neighborhood Council at Crenshaw United Methodist Church.

Community residents had an opportunity to dialogue with Wesson on a wide range of topics, which included the future of “Marlton Square” and the status of the “District Square” commercial development, where demolition permits have recently been approved.

Also discussed were concerns about homeless encampments in Leimert Park, where Wesson’s office is working with stakeholders to develop a plan to increase services to the homeless in that area, as well as reducing the impact of construction along the Crenshaw Light Rail Line between Exposition Boulevard and Vernon Avenue.

Wesson said that although he is not a member of the MTA Board of Directors, he has been working closely with the MTA staff and Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas to minimize the impact on businesses and traffic along Crenshaw Boulevard.

“The Empowerment Congress West Neighborhood Council is a vital community asset, and having an opportunity to meet on a regular basis is important,” said Wesson.

The Empowerment Congress West Area Neighborhood Council is Chaired by David Winston, and Co-Chaired by Denise Stansell.  Other elected members include Yvonne Ellett, Wilson Washensky, Mary Jones-Dark, Carl Morgan, Wendell Conn, Lark Galloway-Gilliam, and Jackie Ryan.

They serve the communities of Arlington Park, Baldwin Hills, Baldwin Village, Baldwin Vista, Cameo Woods, Crenshaw Manor, Leimert Park, and Village Green.
