Local Clergy Honored

Assemblyman Isadore Hall III saluted the community outreach efforts of Pastor Byron Smith, Pastor Bobby Newman, Jr., and Pastor Walter Tucker during a celebration on December 19.

Each minister received the 2012 Clergy of the Year Award at the ceremony recognizing the contributions of businesses, educators, health care providers, union leaders and non-profits located in Hall’s 64th Assembly District.

“I feel very humbled and thankful to be selected for this award because I do have a heart for the community and the people,” said Pastor Smith of Curry Temple C.M.E. Church in Compton.

“I believe that in order to have a healthy church, you must have a healthy community. That motto drives me to reach beyond the walls to make a difference in the lives of people and do all that I can to help,” added Pastor Smith who collaborates with Hall on re-entry programs for parolees, neighborhood health fairs and healthy living seminars.

Pastor Newman, who leads Citizens of Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Compton, said, “I’m excited and elated to receive this award. I’ve been a union member for 40 years and know Assemblyman Hall through the labor movement.”

Offering similar comments, Pastor Walter Tucker of Truth and Love Christian Church remarked, "It's always nice to be recognized and I give God the praise. We're very proud of Assemblyman Hall and what his new leadership is doing."
