It is too late for USC (7-5) to salvage this disappointing season, where they were supposed to compete for a national championship. Really looking at it, there is no high note for this team, because a win will only keep them from becoming the worst preseason No. 1 team ever.
At this point they are tied with Mississippi’s 1964 team for most losses by a preseason No. 1 team. Both teams lost five games each. No preseason No. 1 team has ever lost six games.
USC is unranked, and it does not look like a win over Georgia Tech will move them into the AP Top 25, which has not happened to a preseason No. 1 team since 1964. Only Notre Dame (1950, 4-4-1), Iowa (1961, 5-4), Ohio State (1962, 6-3), USC (1963, 7-3), and Mississippi (1964, 5-5-1) have started the season as the preseason No. 1 team in the nation and finished unranked.
A victory over Georgia Tech will not put USC fans at ease with the team’s current situation. Georgia Tech has a record of 6-7, and had to pension the NCAA to play in a bowl game. They have played four ranked teams, losing to all of them, and they only have one victory over a team that finished the season with a winning record.
This game will be quarterback Matt Barkley’s final college game, and it could also be the last game for receiver Robert Woods, who will be eligible for this coming NFL draft.
The game will be played on December 31 at 11 a.m. on CBS.
