Between running, passing, and playing defense, the Giants are the more balanced team, which the 49ers found in the NFC Championship Game, while the Patriots rely mostly on their passing game. Super Bowl XLVI is a rematch of Super Bowl XLII, and it is looking like it could be a repeat performance. The New York Giants upset the heavily favored New England Patriots, 17-14, the first time around, but if the Giants knock off the favored Patriots again, it will not be an upset at all. Many people are expecting it to happen. The Patriots finished the season with a 13-3 record and the No. 1 seed in the AFC, while the Giants just made it into the NFC playoffs with a 9-7 record, but more people are taking the Giants to win again. The Giants are hot and they have a knack for playing big in the big games, while the Patriots are horrible on defense, which are reasons why many analyst and fans are taking the Giants, even though a team who finished the regular season with a 9-7 team has never won the Super Bowl. In 2007 the Giants struggled during the regular season, but they were able to get their act together late in the season and there was no team playing better than them at that point, including the undefeated Patriots. That resulted in a Super Bowl victory. This year is very similar for the Giants. After 14 games they were 7-7 and their season was on the brink of being lost. Since then they have not lost a single game. Just like in 2007, when they have badly needed a victory, they have gotten it. In the second round of the playoffs the Giants outclassed the defending Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers, who had one of the best offenses in the league, and they were the favorite to win the title this year. But the Giants defense was in Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers face all day and stopped the Packers offense cold. A week after knocking off the No. 1 seed in the NFC playoffs in Green Bay, the Giants knocked off the No. 2 seeded 49ers in San Francisco in dramatic fashion. In this Super Bowl, the Giants have a defense that can compete with the Patriots high scoring offense, but the Patriots may not have the defense to keep the Giants from scoring a lot of points. There has never been a team with a defense as bad as the Patriots to win the Super Bowl. The only team worse than the Patriots on that side of the ball this year was the Packers, who the Giants made easy work of.The cliché that defense wins championships is true. That does not mean that the team with the best defense will win. If that were the case than this game would be played between the Baltimore Ravens, who nearly knocked off the Patriots two weeks ago, and the 49ers, who lost to the Giants in overtime. The cliché simply means that a team with a defense will win the title, and the Giants have one, while the Patriots do not. The Giants do not have the defense that the Ravens or 49ers have, which are two of the top defenses in the league, but the one thing that the Giants do well is get after the quarterback. That was how they beat the Patriots four years ago, and that’s how they will beat the Patriots this time around. In Super Bowl XLII, the Giants pass rush was in Patriots quarterback Tom Brady’s face all game long, which allowed them to hold the highest scoring offense in NFL history to only 14 points. The Giants and Patriots played earlier this season, and the Giants defense came up big again, forcing four turnovers (two interceptions and two fumbles) in a 24-20 victory. If the Patriots cannot handle the Giants pass rush, this game is pretty much a wrap. But if they can, look for this game to be a shootout.
