Brookins Community A.M.E. Church is under new leadership in the person of the Rev. Gregory Keith McLeod I, the youngest pastor ever assigned to head the 34-year-old ministry.
But, although he’s only 31 years old, the Rev. McLeod is more than ready to serve as spiritual shepherd to the members of one of Los Angeles’ most well-known churches.
“I am thankful to God and to my mentor, Bishop T. Larry Kirkland, Sr., for this appointment. I appreciate the Bishop’s trust in me to lead Brookins, the church where he served as the first pastor and that still holds a special place in his heart,” said Pastor McLeod.
One of his main focuses will be on ‘increase,’ a theme he employed with much success in his previous assignment as pastor of Ward Chapel A.M.E. Church in Florissant, Missouri.
“I aspire to empower the Brookins’ congregation to target, think, and talk ‘increase.’ In doing so, I believe the body of Christ will experience ‘increase’ in their faith, favor, family and finance,” he said.
So far, the members have warmly responded to his powerful preaching and gifted singing during the worship services. Also, they have readily embraced his wife, Savalla, and sons, Jeremiah Josiah and Gregory Keith II.
Based on his those who have known him, Pastor McLeod has possessed a life-long love of the Gospel. Born in Kentucky and raised in Alabama, he accepted the call to the ministry at the age of twelve and preached his first sermon in 1994 at Shiloh A.M.E. Church where his father, the late Reverend Willie Joe McLeod, served as pastor.
Ordained an itinerant elder in 1999, Pastor McLeod received his first pastoral assignment at the age of 19 to Mount Olive A.M.E. Church in Pineapple, Alabama. Subsequently, he was appointed to Dunn’s Chapel A.M.E., Jones Chapel A.M.E., Bethel A.M.E., and Lee Chapel A.M.E. Churches, all in Alabama. In 2011, Bishop Kirkland assigned him to Ward Chapel.
Pastor McLeod received his early education in the Ozark City School System and graduated from Carroll High School. He also earned degrees at George C. Wallace State Community College in Dothan, Alabama, and Miles College in Birmingham, Alabama.
“We invite the greater Los Angeles community to join us for worship on Sundays at 9 a.m.,” said Pastor McLeod. “I believe you, too, will experience the spirit of God’s increase in your life.”
