Andora Ferrell Mitchell, the first of 14 children born to Lloyd Ferrell and Izora Coleman Ferrell was born on November 23, 1924 in Coolidge, Texas (Sandy Community). She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Samuel Huston College, Austin, Texas, (now Huston-Tillotson University) and her Master’s of Science degree from the University of San Francisco.

She met Elbert Joe Mitchell in 1945 and they married on May 25, 1946. To this union was born one child, Lucye Jaine. Andora gained more than a son-in-law when Lucye Jaine married John R. Derrough in 1966. John was the son of her heart.

Andora was a teacher and educator for 38 years. After moving to California, she taught in the Willowbrook and Compton School Districts for 22 years.

As a devoted Christian, she joined Second AME Church, Los Angeles, CA in 1964 where she participated in all departments. When her husband’s health failed, they moved to San Diego to be near their daughter and she joined Bethel Memorial AME Church, San Diego, CA.

On July 28, 2010, Andora Lee Mitchell surrendered her will to the Lord. She was preceded in death by her husband Elbert. She leaves many adoring family member and devoted friends who morn her passing.

A memorial service will be held at Bethel Memorial A.M.E. Church on August 3rd at 1:00 pm. Funeral services and burial will be held in Los Angeles at Second A.M.E. Church at 11:00 am on August 5, 2010. Viewing will be held on Wednesday, August 5th at Harrison Ross Mortuaries, 1839 E. Firestone Blvd, Los Angeles, CA from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Internment will be at Inglewood Park Cemetery.
