Classical, traditional, gospel and folk music flowed with beautiful, anointed voices at the Annual Christmas Concert held December 16 at Wilshire United Methodist Church.
Under the direction of Music Director Gwen Wyatt, the English Ministry Cathedral Choir and the Gwen Wyatt Chorale joined with a brass quintet, percussionist, and harpist to present a memorable holiday program.
The diverse repertoire ranged from Vivaldi’s ‘Gloria’ and Bach’s ‘Jesus, Joy of Man’s Desiring’ to Jester Hairston’s spiritual ‘Mary, Mary Where is Your Baby’ and the calypso version of ‘Mary’s Little Boy Chile’ and ‘Gossip Gossip.’ Other selections included ‘He Is Marvelous’ by Rosephany Powell, ‘Nia’ (in honor of Kwanzaa) by Glenn Burleigh and ‘Everywhere I Go’ featuring tenor soloist Robert Pruitt.
Another big hit was the Christmas carols, sing-a-long style. Dr. Wyatt said, “The audience really enjoys singing with us and we love having them participate.”
Expressing pleasure at the audience reception, choir member Sherrill Luke said, “I love the choir, music, the camaraderie, and the humor.”
Choir President Don Slaughter noted, “We’re just like a family.” Vice President Doris Dyer added, “We’re a small choir, but mighty.”
Coming up on January 9, the church will launch ‘Stewardship of the Body – T’ai chi Chih’ on Wednesdays at 2 p.m.
