CNS – Flyers circulating on the campus of El Camino College urged students this week to take precautions following an attempted sexual assault targeting a young woman. The student was walking alone about 6:45 p.m. September 5 to her vehicle in the Lot F Lower parking structure at El Camino College when someone approached her from behind, campus police chief Michael Trevis said in a statement. The suspect placed his left hand across the victim’s mouth and began to touch her left inner thigh with their other hand, Trevis said, but she elbowed him and began to scream, prompting the assailant to flee.
The victim was unable to provide a description or even confirm the attacker’s gender but observed that he was wearing white Nike tennis shoes and reeked of cigarette smoke, Trevis said. A campus alert urges students “be alert” and “use the buddy system or the Campus Courtesy shuttle” rather than walking alone. This is the third such attack since last November, although campus police say the incidents are unrelated. Campus police have installed nine new surveillance cameras and special emergency phones to enhance campus safety.
