CME Church Holds Conference Honoring Presiding Prelate
The Twenty-Fourth Session of the Annual Conference of The Southern California Region of The Ninth Episcopal District Christian Methodist Episcopal Church and the 99th Year of Witness in California will convene on Sunday, August 23 through Wednesday, August 26, 2009. It will be held at The Four Points by Sheraton LAX Hotel, 9750 Airport Boulevard, Los Angeles, California, hosted by The Phillips Temple C.M.E. Church, Los Angeles, California, Rev. John Deron Johnson, Host Pastor. Rev. Napoleon Goshay, Host Presiding Elder-Los Angeles District, Rev. Peris J. Lester, I, Presiding Elder-Los Angeles-San Diego District, Rev. Julio A. Andujo, Regional Administrator, Mrs. Doris Y. Williamson, Missionary Liaison, Bishop Dotcy I. Isom, Jr., Associate Bishop and Bishop Henry M. Williamson, Sr., Presiding Prelate of the Ninth Episcopal District. The C.M.E. Quadrennial Theme is: “From Good to Great: The Jesus Challenge,” “Together We Can!”
Highlights of The Annual Conference of The Southern California Region
The Annual Conference will convene on Sunday, August 23rd at 4:00 p.m. with a “Quadrennial Worship Service Celebration” which will be held at Lewis Metropolitan C.M.E. Church, 4900 South Western Avenue, Los Angeles, California. The special guest speaker will be Bishop Thomas L. Brown, Sr., Presiding Prelate of The Fourth Episcopal District. The Southern California Mass Choir will render songs of praise and The Annual Conference Ushers will be on duty. Immediately following the Quadrennial Worship Service Celebration, a special “Quadrennial Reception” will be held from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. in the fellowship hall honoring Bishop and Mrs. Henry M. Williamson, Sr. and Family for Outstanding and Dedicated Leadership for the past Eight (8) Quadrennial Years. The Ninth Episcopal District was Bishop Williamson’s first appointment as Presiding Prelate, which encompasses Five Regions, namely: The Alaska-Pacific Conference, The Arizona-New Mexico Conference, The Northern California Conference, The Oklahoma Conference and The Southern California Conference, which includes over 120 churches on the West Coast. He currently resides in Los Angeles, California, where he has served with Dignity, Dedication and Distinction, always rendering Extraordinary and Outstanding Services to promote the Purposes, Aims and Goals of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, The Community, The Nation and The World! Special guests, including city and state officials will be in attendance to pay Special Tribute and Honor at the reception.
Monday, August 24th is “Women in Ministry Day.” Registration will begin at 8:00 a.m. at The Four Points by Sheraton LAX Hotel and the fee is $50. The Opening Meditation will be 9:00 – 9:30 a.m. featuring Rev. Alvin Young, Pastor of Brown Temple C.M.E. Church in Santa Ana, CA as the Speaker. The Opening Session will be 9:30 – 11:00 a.m. with the Presentation of Bishop Henry M. Williamson, Sr., Presiding Prelate, Roll Call of Ministers and Roll Call of Lay Delegates. The Minister’s Spouses, Widows and Widowers Hour of Worship will be 11:00 a.m. – 12 Noon with the featured Speaker, Mrs. Kim Johnson, First Lady of Phillips Temple C.M.E. Church of Los Angeles. Lunch will be served from 12 Noon – 2:00 p.m. A Health Presentation: The Witness Project will be 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. with Sisters Ann Cochran and Holly Kiger as the Presenters. The Business Session will be held 3:00 – 4:00 p.m. Then the Plenary Session entitled “Go Grow Your Church! Spiritual Leadership for African American Congregations,” will be held 4:00 – 5:00 p.m. Featured speakers include Rev. Dr. James Markham-“Evangelism,” Rev. Brian Reese-“Administration,” Rev. Gwendolyn Rector-“Stewardship,” and Rev. Joseph C. Gardner, Sr.-“Raising the Church Budget.” Dinner will be served 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. The Evening Service of Worship will begin at 7:00 p.m. featuring the $100 Lena Jones Rice Missionary March, Mrs. Alfreda Davis, Conference Missionary President, and Mrs. Doris Williamson, Missionary Liaison. The Special Guest Speaker will be Dr. Louise Baker-Brown, First Lady of the Fourth Episcopal District. The Annual Conference Missionary Choir will be featured and the Ushers will include Phillips Temple C.M.E. Church and The Annual Conference Ushers.
Tuesday, August 25th is “Laity and Ministry to Men’s Day.” Registration will begin at 8:00 a.m. and the fee is $50.00. The Morning Meditation will be 9:00 – 9:30 a.m. featuring Rev. Dr. James Markham, Pastor of Emmanuel Temple C.M.E. Church in Victorville, CA as the Speaker. The Business Session will begin at 9:30 a.m. – 12 Noon. Lunch will be served 12 Noon – 2:00 p.m. The Memorial Service of Worship will be 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. with Featured Speaker, Rev. Napoleon Goshay, Presiding Elder of the Los Angeles/San Diego District. The Business Session will be at 3:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. Dinner will be served 5:00 pm. – 7:00 p.m. The Evening Service of Worship-Holy Communion, Laity and Ministry to Men will begin at 7:00 p.m. with Mr. Donald Bruce Levingston, Conference Lay Leader and Mr. Travis Hicks, Conference Ministry to Men. The Special Guest Speaker will be Bishop Charles Blake, Presiding Prelate of The Church of God in Christ and Senior Pastor of West Angeles COGIC, Los Angeles, CA. The Southern California Mass Choir will render songs of praise and The Annual Conference Usher will be on duty. The worship service will also include an “Adam and Eve” March.
Wednesday, August 26th will be the Closing Session. The Morning Meditation will begin at 9:00 – 9:30 a.m. featuring Guest Speaker, Mrs. Phedonia Johnson, National President of One Church, One School. The Plenary Session entitled “Go Grow Your Church!” will begin at 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. Speaker will include Rev. Byron Smith-“Worship,” Rev. Pansy Washington-“Personal and Congregational Spiritual Growth,” and Rev. Julio A. Andujo-“Seven Paths to Your Best Ministry Now!” The Business Session will be 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. The Ordination and Closing Service of Worship will be 11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. with Bishop Henry M. Williamson, Sr. as the Closing Speaker, Presiding Prelate of the Ninth Episcopal District. Everyone is welcome to come!
