Hello World, I hope you all enjoyed the Thanks Giving Holiday! Friends, family and love-ones are what truly make these holiday seasons festive. While at home, this past Thanks Giving, with my family (which I came to live with at age 17 under the California Foster Care System), I witnessed generations of married couples. The love seemed genuine and although not perfect, sincere or as I’d like to call it, “Black, Like, Love!”
What I will share with you all are my thoughts regarding the title of this article, “Black, Like, Love.” I recall years ago, while board, reading Webster’s definition of different colors. The color “Black” had the most negative condemnation type meaning. Well, through out my life, thus far, I have enjoyed the actual comfort of my black skin and at no time have I ever associated the love I have for myself, my family, my friends and my higher power as negative, like the definitions of the word “Black” according to Webster’s dictionary.
So, the point of my article is this; Love is dark at times, along with being resentful, or hostile, or furious, or consequential and even shameful! Yet even though all those words are used within Webster’s dictionary to describe the color “Black.” Those descriptions are associated with what I believe to be the inspiration that allows this planet to spin! That motivation being, Love or “Black, Like, Love!”
For example, my parents have been married for 31 years and because I lived under their roof for approximately one and a half years, I have been witness to their “Black, Like, Love” for one another. I can honestly say, witnessing their “Black, Like, Love” allows me to hope for the same! A week back, while in the city of San Jose CA (signing books), I spoke with a woman by the name of Mattie; she is a gorgeous woman, whom I share the same complexion with. Mattie has been married for 39 years. She spoke with me about her “Black, Like, Love” and while doing so; both corners of her mouth seem to touch both tips of her ears!
During this holiday season and afterwards, please understand that all things associated with “Love” is not perfect, nor in my opinion should it be! There are many ways to describe love and with every color you can imagine, along with ever word within Webster’s Dictionary, mixed together in one pot, you will discover the color “Black.” Thus you will have all mental, physical and emotional “Likes” to contend with. By doing so, you will live to celebrate years and years of “Black, Like, Love!”
