Fairfax, Westchester, and Taft lead the way in the City Section

For about the last decade and a half there has been a big three in the City Section for boy’s high school basketball.  Westchester, Fairfax, and Taft.  Those three schools have taken turns winning the City championship, with Westchester leading the way.

But the past two years has seen Fairfax hit hard times while Westchester and Taft battled each other for the title the past two years.  Two years ago Westchester defeated Taft in the championship game, and last season Taft knocked off Westchester to win the title.

This year they are back to being the Big 3, as Fairfax has reloaded, and the three schools are the only City schools that appear in combined City and Southern Section rankings.

Fairfax and Westchester made easy work of Venice and University to open up league play, and the two Western League powers will face each other twice during the regular season, at Westchester on January 25 and at Fairfax on February 10 to close out the regular season.

That final game could decide playoff seedings.

All three schools will be on display at the Nike Extravaganza on February 4 at Mater Dei High School.

With league play in full swing, Taft will be playing most of their remaining games in the San Fernando Valley, but they will make one trip to Fairfax this Saturday.

Taft will play in the Fairfax City Preview against Grant at 5 p.m., while Fairfax will play against Narbonne at 7 p.m.  Fairfax will also play on Friday at Palisades at 7 p.m. and at home against LACES on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.

Westchester will travel to Venice at 4 p.m. on Wednesday the 18th.
